Robert Devito's   CityScapes

Robert DeVito's colorful and fantastic "Skylines" are featured this month at RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon. A New York City multimedia artist, DeVito's brightly painted Skylines are sculpted from driftwood and reflect his extensive travels through Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East. Each piece is one of a kind, no reproductions of his images. His creations are so innovative and original that the Library of Congress has issued copyrights on the idea.

Robert has studied throughout the United States and Mexico to develop his unique work. Over the years his work has attracted a great deal of media attention -- a personal, in-depth interview was aired on PBS and his work was chosen by three Manhattan branches of Tourneau as a representation of New York City during the a Democratic Convention. In addition to his own murals, he planned and executed the restoration of the large mural bracing the SAS terminal at JFK Airport in New York City. His Skylines have been in several galleries such as the Celadon Gallery in Soho and the Parlor Gallery in Douglaston. He has won first place awards at numerous are shows around the region.

Photographs by Lynne R. Cashman

May 12 - June 6, 2005

Artist Reception May 14, 2005 4 - 7pm Beacon Second Saturday

Concentrating on the color, light and shadows found in nature, Lynne Cashman's
photographs appear as paintings as she creates impressionistic images in my camera - without any manipulation.  Realism becomes an impression and then an abstraction. This rare view  of nature reflects, not only what she sees, but they portray how a particular scene makes her feel. They capture situations that will not be  repeated-nor should they be forgotten.

Lynne R. Cashman has been a photographer since 1987 and has served on the Board of Professional Women Photographers organization and the New York City Sierra Club Photography Committee.  She has been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Steinhardt Conservatory, The Islip Art Museum in Islip, New York; the Westbeth Gallery, New York,The Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville, New York; the Lee-Parrish Gallery in Waitsfield,  Vermont and the Erector Square Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.

In addition her work is in public and corporate collections,  including those of Elmhurst General Hospital in Flushing, New York and the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Cashman’s  photographs have appeared in INKWELL:  A publication of poetry and prose published by Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.

Windsor chairs and tables by Maureen and Ferris Rugar

Maureen Rugar is the first (and only) woman to graduate from the Windsor Institute, and is currently on the staff. She has also been teaching traditional Rug Hooking for the past 20 years. For Ferris, creating with wood has been a passion since childhood. Working together they handcraft some of the most beautiful Windsors available. And they have been named as part of the Directory of Traditional American Crafts® which highlights the 200 top artisans and crafters working in the styles and media traditional in early America. The listed artists are chosen by a jury of museum professionals and other experts in both art and history and truly represent a selection of the best traditional craftworkers in America. With the 2005 Directory, Early American Life will have conferred these honors for nineteen years, making it the unchallenged mark of excellence in traditional crafting.

To own a Windsor chair from Ferris and Maureen Rugar is to have an original work of art. Every chair is handcrafted, one at a time, and has its own individual character. The chairs start from a red oak log, a rough cut plank of pine and maple. Using antique and reproduction tools, the wood is shaped using the same methods that were used 200 years ago. Once the chairs are assembled, they are painted using authentic milk paints, which further enhances the character of the chair. These woods and techniques, all of which have been used for several hundred years, combine to make a truly beautiful yet durable piece which will last for generations. They will become your future heirlooms.

Handmade Rugs by Liza Philips

Designed by Liza Phillips,  these are made of the finest quality wool, hand-knotted and hand-scissored and made by Tibetans in Nepal.  Because of the high altitude at which the sheep are raised, the wool is very rich in Lanolin oil.  This is very important when the wool is dyed, because the lanolin not only absorbs the dye better, but also give the rugs an unequalled richness in texture and appearance.  Rugs come in runners of 2 x 6 and area rugs of 4 x 6.

Photographic Lamp Shades by Mary Ann Glass .  The lamp shades come in different images and colors.  A wonderful accessory for any room.

Wardell's Pottery has created fountains with running water for your indoors or outdoors pleasure.   It adds a soothing sound to any room.  They require electricity for the pump.

For the Garden -

birdbaths, garden sculptures, bird houses and bird feeders by Stephen Fabrico.

From Michael Murphy we have several types of birdhouses made from old barn wood, painted wood, baskets and gourds.

And we also have birdfeeders from Stephen and Michael.

Celebrating its two year anniversary, RiverWinds Gallery presents Peter Billman, Hudson Valley Plein Air Painter.  Drawing on the abundant beauty of the Hudson River, Peter’s paintings capture the many moods, essence of place and richness of the Hudson valley and its environs. He has an element of the new Hudson River School with a contemporary appeal.

Peter Billman recently moved to Newburgh, NY where he used many and varied talents to restore an early 1800's Federal style house.  From his studio on the top floor of this beautiful bed and breakfast, the Goldsmith Dennison House, he has spectacular views of the Hudson River.

His paintings show his appreciation of the river, the mountains, its nature. Schooled in England, Italy and the US, he is a BFA graduate of Syracuse University. Although painting has been a constant goal in his life, the past thirty years have included occupations such as architectural woodworking, furniture making, and a design/build business specializing in decorative painting, murals and period finishes. His paintings are in private collections in the US and Europe.

On July 9, the artist reception was held.

To help celebrate the opening and the two year anniversary of RiverWinds, the Jazz Duo of Maureen Morrissey and Dave Myers performed eclectic mix of easy listening and jazz standards.

Many enjoyed the champagne punch, refreshments and the many artistic creations in the gallery.

But the Star of the show was Peter and his beautiful oil paintings.

Kippy Boyle and many others came and met Peter and his wife Nancy.

We thank them both from coming and we especially thank Peter for his incredible artwork.  His capture of the Hudson River and its surrounding landscape is simply beautiful.

And special thanks for being part of RiverWinds and our two year anniversary.

The show will be up until August 8,2005, so please come and enjoy the show.

August 13 Artist Reception 4 - 7pm with Live Music by the Scott Helland

Beacon Second Saturday and Windows on Main St. 12 - 9pm

RiverWinds Gallery celebrates the addition of noted photographer Alison Shaw to its permanent roster of artists with powerful images that demonstrate the sensual pleasure of color photography.

Joining Alison’s work – drawn from her Artist Studio, Tuscan anc classic Seascape portfolios – are Rita Pignatos’s beautiful images from Tuscany, Sicily and Mexico.

Both artists have a profound understanding of natural light and color, and their work is a joy to behold.

Alison Shaw often uses quite long exposures on her seascapes and landscapes to capture lush, almost abstract, images that seem to float in their own atmosphere. In contrast, the images in her Artist Studio portfolio, while retaining an abstract quality, are crisp, bold and vibrant. Shaw has exhibited in one-woman shows at more than 15 galleries throughout the United States. Over 4,000 of her photographs are in corporate and private collections throughout the U. S. and Europe. Several books have also been published of her photographs, and her work has appeared nationally in numerous newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Time, Smithsonian, Nikon World, and Yankee magazine. Alison teaches photography workshops in Italy, Canada and New England for Maine Photographic Workshops and Rocky Mountain School of Photography.

Rita Pignato has studied with Alison Shaw as well as Joel Meyerwitz, Sam Abell, and other renowned teachers. A half dozen of her Tuscan images have been selected for the last two editions of National Geographic’s Guide to Tuscany, and she has had several one-woman shows in Manhattan. "Most importantly for me is my love of color, "Rita says "and then, the patience to wait for that moment when the lighting and the image combine in a magical way".

RiverWinds is also part of Windows on Main St. in Beacon and is featuring Karlos Carcamo as our special artist. The artist reception is on Saturday August 13, from 4 - 7pm. To help celebrate this special opening, Scott Helland will perform on acoustic guitar. The gallery will be open till 9pm as part of Beacon’s Second Saturday and the Windows on Main St. event.

There is also new work by Mary Ann Glass and Linda Hubbard.

Karlos Carcamo, our Windows on Main St artist, experiments with art in an urban setting working with found images and objects, looping in current and past historical events. He uses the constructed nature of Hip Hop Culture as a conceptual resource for the production of his work. He samples from art historical sources, using each period as a reference point, to build upon. Using the idea of sampling as a way of "recovering" art historical modes, he then re-codes them with autobiographical information, subverting the formal elements of the work with personal and subjective narratives that allude to different aspects of my daily life. For more information on Windows on Main St, go to www.beaconarts.org.

Scott Helland plays his acoustic guitar with a passion, fluidity and natural grace. There is an unassuming brilliance in the way he plays, winding and weaving thorough multi-layered soundscapes. He will be playing during the opening reception on Saturday, August 13th from 4 - 7pm. His CD’s will be available at that time.

Gallery hours are Thursday - Monday 12 - 6pm and 9pm on Second Saturday.
Directions: Route 84 exit 11, take Route 9D South, turn left at Main Street. The Gallery is on the left, a block and half East on Main Street.

RiverWinds "Windows on Main St"

Untitled (RiverWinds) is the first artwork in a series of pieces that incorporate the idea of cleaning as a process for the creation of art. Using it to explore issues of social/private space and the visibility of ones identity through the association of your occupation.  It’s also a piece that is part autobiographical and homage to my father who worked most of his life cleaning office buildings in order to support our family.  Transforming his occupation into my own by using the mopped water collected to make individual portraits of the four owners of RiverWinds Gallery.  In the process, making their images visible, capturing a moment from the residues of daily life.

The Cornwall-on-Hudson native recently moved to Addison, Maine. Her paintings reflect her love of the wetland and tidal marshes of both the Hudson River region and Maine. Her response to nature is somewhere between the naturalistic and the romantic. Eline blends her pastels seamlessly with an ethereal quality. Her work reflects a world of quiet solitude captured with a light atmospheric touch. "In our fast paced and uncertain world today, getting lost in one of Eline’s paintings brings a sense of calm to my soul" says Linda Hubbard of RiverWinds. Eline has had solo and group shows throughout the Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties and several galleries in Maine. She has a degree in Fine Arts from SUNY, New Paltz, NY and is part of corporate and private collections around the world.

The use of different mediums combine with a resin and glazing process give the art of Elisa Pritzker a distinctively and lasting finish. Her commissions and creations are unique, miniatures worlds that people are fascinated to enjoy and collect.

Polymer Clay artist

Loretta Lam

I am inspired by the color, the technical aspects, and the design possibilities.  Polymer clay is an amazing material – soft and pliable in its raw state; hard and durable after baking.  It can be textured, molded, carved, patinaed, polished, and veneered.  Each piece from design concept to final polish is developed with a theme in color, form, style.
