Subliminal - Painting 24 x 36 by Ellen Lewis
Wachovia Securities LLC of Rhinebeck and RiverWinds Gallery of Beacon announce their new show -- "The Forest” - at the Wachovia office in Rhinebeck. The trees around us have inspired artists to create works that depict beauty, solitude, joy and peace. Ellen Lewis, Marilyn Price, Rita Pignato, Christopher Staples, Mary Ann Glass, and Linda T. Hubbard share with us their interpretations of trees in paintings, ceramic tiles, mixed media and photographs. The artist reception is Friday October 24, 2008 5:50 – 7:30 on the 2nd floor of Montgomery Row Wachovia offices. The art may be purchased through RiverWinds Gallery, 845-838-2880.
“Most memories people hold on to are in color . . . bright vibrant color. Because of the colors and the sense of the unknown, my paintings will promote instant reflection,” says Ellen Lewis. “Painting helps me honor a connection to my mother who recently died of cancer, but recently it has also become an expression of solitude and joy reflected in the bright colors and fiery nature of some of my landscapes.” Born in Queens NY, Lewis, 38, now resides in Sandy Springs, GA and spends summers in her hometown Floral Park, NY and in a rustic family cabin in Harriman State Park, NY. In addition to being represented full-time by a well-known and respected Georgia gallery she is also being sold worldwide to corporate and private establishments by a renowned fine art publishing company. Currently Lewis’s works are in private and commercial collections nationally and including private commissions. Lewis’s work has been included in-group exhibitions at New York’s Art Director’s Club, The Whitney Museum of American Art and The School of Visual Arts, where she received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in three-dimensional design and illustration.
Marilyn Price is a Master Ceramicist and her canvas is a clay tile. Her landscapes layered glazes are an attempt to blur the traditional distinctions between painting on canvas, and glazing on clay or using color on clay tiles. Because many stoneware glazes are just shades of white, tan, or gray in their unfired state, Ms. Price needs a mental image of the landscape in order to proceed with the glazing, especially during the first stages. The sensual surfaces, colors, and textures created by clay and glaze create visual and tactile equivalents of the artist's experience of nature. In this same spirit she has made other wall pieces with small handmade tiles. In this process, small damp, unfired tiles are pressed into powdered, colored porcelain, fired to stoneware, then formed into compositions. Many subtleties are inherent in the exploration of color and texture in this technique. Ms. Price’s background in art includes intensive under graduate study in painting at Cooper Union and NYU, and graduate studies at NYU and Columbia. After many years as a painter and art educator, she became involved in ceramics. Her accomplishments in this area include extensive work on the potter's wheel, and hand building sculptured vessels and wall pieces. Ms. Price resides in LaGrange and her work is in galleries and private collections throughout the valley and beyond.
Photographers Mary Ann Glass, Linda T. Hubbard and Rita Pignato have captured trees and forests from Roosevelt and Vanderbilt Estates to places around the world. This time of year with the autumn hues are simply beautiful and show the artists’ passion for the nature around them. And Christopher Staples adds her interpretation with her mixed media and monoprints. The overall effect is nature at its best.

Polaroid Emulsion by Mary Ann Glass |
"For me, the lure of far-off lands encompasses both new and old -- the thrill of seeing a place for the first time while at the same time trodding historic land.” says Mary Ann Glass. “The Byzantine emperor Justinian rode his horse across the threshold of St.Sophie in Istanbul when it was completed in the 6th century, and we still marvel at its beauty and power in the 21st century. Mt. Ararat is considered by many where Noah's ark landed, and we photographed it from our bus. The vibrant cacaphony and aromas and colors of the spice market in Istanbul have been unchanged for centuries and are as alluring today as they have always been. Mary Ann finds travel stretches her imagination and satisfies an urge to see new lands. Her photographs keep the memory fresh and let us also travel with her.

Rita Pignato has traveled through many lands. “Through my passion of photography I feel closer to the land, the people and the many different wonders of this world. With camera in hand I try embrace the light and the magnificent landscape that surrounds us. Besides cherishing the land, I have a great desire in capturing its people, its architecture and its history. During my travels, I also did street shooting along with landscape. I found this to be challenging, but through perseverance, my street scenes of people became full of energy and vigor and shows a zest for and an interest in living. By observing my surroundings, I was able to come upon surprising moments.” Rita’s ambition is to share the splendor of this great earth with others through her photography, which is a true passion. The photographs in this show reveal that passion. |
